Our thematic goal this year is to participate as co-authors in the redemptive story of God to make the world a better place.
We are all authors in God's story, our lives become the poem of God as we create his kingdom in our actions and choices. Our stories are important because they make us aware of God's movement in our world and inspire us to dream new dreams and imagine that a better world is possible.
We invite you to share your story of how you are authoring with God.
In the big.
In the small.
In the choices you have made to live in his kingdom.
February 15 2007,Last night 22 representatives from theparadox (our senior high group) went down to the Mustard Seed to serve food. We left the church at 6:10pm and like any great youth outing there are always a few important ingredients.
You have to have terrible directions, drivers who get lost, and someone who always shows up late. All that said, we got to The Seed by 6:30pm. It’s always interesting when you enter a situation like this because you immediately recognize the different culture that you have just stepped into; one that doesn’t care about how much money you have, where you live, what you do, or how important you are. You enter a culture where people are starving just for the bare necessities.
Once we entered The Seed we went to the kitchen and were broken into four groups. The first group with stylish hair nets all ready to serve the soup in the kitchen. The second group, with aprons on, were ready to get out on the frontlines and serve food to the people. The third group headed down stairs to chop vegetables for the next evening’s meal.
I was in this group and we were all given different knives for cutting the vegetables. The knife that I got was like a butter knife so I made a bit of a game out of it. Simple really, get the knife of the person beside you when they aren’t looking. The last group headed into the shower area where they handed out toiletries to people that were there to shower. All in all the night was phenomenal, filled with laughs and community building and at the same time we were truly learning and living out what it means to be the people of God.
As we left we had to get through a large crowd that were hovering around the door because they were trying to get a spot to sleep for the night, and everyone that we passed made a point of thanking us. Wow - when was the last time I appreciated a meal that much? The simple act of serving became sacred for me. A common meal becomes a place where we can serve.
Jesus asks us to do two things; love God and love people, a simplistic saying full of unbelievable implications if we actually do it. I am proud to be apart of a community that is starting to get it, that is starting to reach out. I am so lucky to rub shoulders with these students each week, these students who are continually teaching me what it means to be Jesus to the people around me.
