Weekend University

weekend university

a new initiative at Westside.

We all have ambitions, things we’d like to learn and areas of our understanding we’d like to expand, but between kids, family, friends, work and, let’s be honest, church, it can be tough to find the energy to commit to one more program.

Enter Weekend University: a one day chance for us to engage with guest teachers and each other on a range of topics that intersect with our lives.

We’re hoping to run four weekend universities this coming ministry year focusing on four areas of Westside.

SATURDAY FEBRUARY 6, 2010

Faith@Home
With Greg McCombs, National Director of Canadian Marriage & Family Network 9am-noon in the West Hall
Childcare will be provided, but children must be registered in advance

Outline:

Session 1 - The What and the Why of Faith@Home

We know from research that…
- moms and dads are 2 to 3 times more influential in the spiritual formation of their children than any church program or curriculum.
- the majority (85%) of those parents recognize that they are responsible for that spiritual formation taking place.
- less than 10% of Christian homes are engaging in the kinds of activities and discussions that make that kind of formation possible.

As a result 70% of our churched kids are not only leaving the church but are abandoning their faith and a large majority of those are not coming back.

In this first session we’ll discover together how we as parents and we as the Church must shift our thinking, taking a new look at an old strategy that God has had in mind for the home as the center for faith development.  We’ll also consider the significant opportunity before the Church today of partnering with the home as the primary place where faith is nurtured as we engage the next generation with a living faith that truly matters.

 Session 2 – Building Faith@Home

In this session we’ll look at some practical ways we as parents can stayvitally engaged in the faith formation of our children.  Participants will discover how to recognize teachable moments and take advantage of theGod-given opportunities to influence their kids for His glory.  Specifically we will consider the power of the spoken blessing – something each one of us longs for and desperately needs throughout our lives.  Everyone will leave with some practical tools & resources to begin implementing what they’ve learned in an effort to pass their faith to the next generation.
