What is generosity? Better: what does it look like to be generous? When I faced that question this week I sought out no higher authority than dictionary.com, one of my favorite “go to” sites. What I found was a rather picturesque description, and maybe that is because generosity can only be understood through practical living examples. Gen·er·ous [jen-er-uhs] – adjective 1. liberal in giving or sharing; unselfish: a generous gift 2. free from meanness or smallness of mind or character; magnanimous 3. large; abundant; ample: a generous portion of pie 4. fertile; prolific: generous soil
This past Sunday we launched into our fall season with a clear call to participate in two complementary ways of being: the life of personal transformation and the life of practical generosity. Our text for these next three weeks is James 1:26-27 (read it!), a text we encourage you to carry with you. Of course there is an analysis that needs to be made of these words -- in order to live well we need to understand well -- but will you allow us to begin this fall season with something entirely practical?
I am reminded of what Karl Marx famously said: “The philosophers have only interpreted the world… the point is to change it.” While Marxian solutions to the human problem have not exactly worked, I do find myself in agreement with the basic sentiment. The point indeed is change.
So, how can we participate in redemptive change? At what point does our analysis move to practical engagement? Perhaps we need to learn as we go. Perhaps we best learn transformation and generosity through practical, engaged steps.
With this in mind, I am giving my remaining space to a timely announcement. Over the past year, a practically minded group of Westsiders has been meeting, a group we call the Local Outreach Team. The singular passion of this group is finding ways to demonstrate a generous heart to our city. Consider this an invitation to become part of a movement.
An Adventure in Generosity: Local Outreach Planning Session
If you are interested in advancing Westside King’s Church efforts to serve others in our city – to be the difference we can’t help but make – please join us Saturday, September 18 from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm at WKC for a Local Outreach planning session. This planning session is not related to Global Missions, but rather to our local mission within Calgary.
Together we’ll chart the course to take WKC to a new and even more impactful level in our service to community. Click here to read Chris’ vision for Local Outreach at WKC.
