September 12 is Launch Sunday at Westside King’s Church. After the “lazier” days of summer when the clock and calendar are not so demanding (in theory anyway), we regather, reconnect, and renew our commitments to this faith community we call our own. Its a great time of year, part of the seasonal rhythm we have become fully practiced in. I personally love the fall season, and for a host of reasons. Crisp days, football, and thanksgiving are among my favorite things. But even more than that, I have grown to appreciate the wisdom of the seasons, especially the idea that each season brings something unique and particular. I have grown to love the thought that each season carries something necessary for my life and well-being, for our life and well-being. I have come to see that there is a time for everything: a time to rest and a time to work, a time to ponder and a time to take action. If this sounds vaguely familiar to you, it is the wisdom found in the third chapter of Ecclesiastes:
For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven. (Ecclesiastes 3:1)
Perhaps you will want to ponder that passage and, before God, ponder the meaning of the season ahead. This ancient wisdom reminds us that our days are not all meant for the same purpose. There is a difference in our days, and the important thing is to recognize the purpose of the season we find ourselves in.
For the past few days I have been trying to get more specific about this idea. I have been asking myself what I should look for in the season immediately ahead. And, more broadly, I have been contemplating what we as a community should understand about the meaning of these months ahead of us.
This Sunday is an important reminder that we are now entering a new season, a season of unique purpose. Chris will be sharing some very important words that speak to the heart of what I have been saying. And we will put in your hands a tool we think can help all of us move through this coming year with thoughtfulness and awareness.
We have been working, praying and preparing for this moment for some time now. What will make this really great will be your participation.
We really want you there. It won’t be the same without you.
Special Note: We invite you to the Launch Tailgate Party, to take place this Sunday immediately after the 11:11 am celebration. Bring your lawnchairs. Check online at wkc.org for details.
