This Christmas it will be hard to miss the buzz. And since we are fans, we feel the need to talk about it. We also sense the opportunity to take a major cultural event — the theatrical release of The Hobbit movie — and turn it into a discussion point about faith and the story of Jesus. You have heard us say this in different ways, but we see the stories of J.R.R. Tolkien (The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit) as defining stories for our times. Written on the foundation of Tolkien’s deep Christian faith, these journey tales allow us to see the truth of life in unexpected ways.
And that is what we want to do in this brief two-part series: place what is familiar but often ignored (the Gospel story) alongside what is less familiar but keenly observed (Tolkien’s Hobbit), and see where the connections are.
