“For Christians do not place their hope in their children, but rather their children are a sign of their hope, in spite of the considerable evidence to the contrary, that God has not abandoned this world. Because we have confidence in God, we find the confidence in ourselves to bring new life into this world…”
— Stanley Hauerwas
Children are at the front line of injustice in the world. If something wrong or unjust happens somewhere around the globe, or in our backyard, it’s often children that suffer the burden more than most. Maybe this is why the Bible writers so often focus on how a people’s behaviour towards children will say so much about their attitude towards justice. The great Hebrew prophet Isaiah said, “Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless…“ For Jesus the kingdom of God was rooted in an attitude of justice towards children. So it seems to us that we should probably talk about kids.
